Northland has its history in wine making, with the first vines being planted in Kerikeri by Samuel Marsden and the first wine being made by James Busby.  Although wine making didn't take off in Northland for another 100 years it is now an expanding industry.  The established vineyards are producing a wide variety of wines that have a distinctive fruity or spicy flavor.  Along with these top quality wines there is an array of cafes and restaurants serving regional cuisine.
